Chicken Police: Paint It RED! Review

Chicken Police: Paint It RED!

I don’t play a lot of point and click adventure games and this is barely one of them.

The Wild Gentlemen brought us the wild world of the Chicken Police back in 2020 in this, the first of two games, universe.

We control a rough around the edges burnt out old chicken cop called Sonny (Pronounced Sahnny by some people). Along with his partner Marty we are out to solve a mystery after some off screen events that precede the game. It seems that the two are pretty famous. Or, at least, they were.

Chicken Police exists in an alternative universe which is populated by anthropomorphic animals. Generally it’s a humanoid body with animal heads and/or hands and feet. Our two heroes are, obviously, chickens. Other characters include cats, rabbits, dogs, a giraffe, a bear, a crocodile, a racoon, an owl, and there are also insects. More on them in the sequel.

Sonny, being basically retired, is taking private cases out of his office/permanent residence in a hotel room. He is approached by a distraught woman and takes a case that’s a little more than he can handle. He recruits his old partner Marty and they, off the books, investigate.

The game has very strong 1940’s noir vibes, which is probably obvious. I love that about the game. Almost everything is voice acted and generally fairly well. We have to sold puzzles, interrogate suspects, there’s a couple of action scenes. At the end of the day though is really is at its core a point and click adventure game.

The graphics are very nice. Well designed characters and backgrounds. The animations are a little stiff though. It feels kind of like flash the way the characters move and bend. It’s a little distracting but it’s not terrible.

The music is excellent. It doesn’t always knock it out of the park with the vibes the scene calls for but it is really solid across the board. I’m happy to own a copy of it.

There was a time when I was streaming where we did a lot of noir games, this was part of that era for your old pal Jason. It really ended up being one of the better games we did in that era. It’s quirky, has some absurd moments, it’s funny, it’s dark, it’s moody, it’s gorgeous. It’s a great game.
