A LowBiasMonthly from back in 2018. Kewlio wanted us to play games on Kongregate, so I picked this one. Why? I dunno why. But I did. Maybe I saw the pictures and thought about Minecraft/Terraria? Maybe.
Speaking of Terraria. The game does have a neat little character creator thing. We ended up with some kind of Ben Franklin wannabe.
In this game we seem to be some sort of survivors on an island. After collecting wood and building a hut we meet some people, we get some tasks, and from there on it’s all about crafting and mining and terrarraring.
There’s probably more to the story than that but we didn’t spend a lot of time on this one.
Gameplay is your basic 2d side scrolling resource gathering and building thing. Again, think Terraria but not as complicated. This is a browser game after all. There’s levels, a skill tree, combat, all sorts of stuff like another game we’ve mentioned too many times already.
This being a browser game, it requires a lot of keyboarding… which I’m usually ok with but I did struggle with a few things in this game. Of course you can remap stuff so I’m not going to ding it too much for that, that’s on me. But moving and doing things was a little rough around the edges in some places.
Graphically this is a very pixely game. I like it but this was almost too pixely for my taste. They’re not bad, far from it, but they are a little… I dunno… cheap? That sounds like a bad word to use for graphics but that’s how I feel about it. I think you know what I’m trying to say.
What music I did hear in the game was nice. Kind of had an older 16 bit platformer vibe to it and that’s alright with me. It was pleasant to listen to. I have no big complaints here.
And speaking of no big complaints, I have none about the game. It was a solid little experience that, I think, would be much better served if it weren’t a browser game. We could get some controller support, local game saves, maybe a little better on the graphics side of things and I think you’d have a pretty fun time. Not that it isn’t fun as is, it’s just less fun.
