As Leonard Cohen once said “You want it darker.”
Into The Hive is the sequel to Paint It Red and, man, did they up the ante on this one.
After a string of insects going missing/ending up dead over in The Hive part of town, our plucky (see cause they’re chickens) protagonists are on patrol.
The story picks up shortly after the events of Paint It Red and Sonny and Marty have been tasked with going into The Hive to find out what’s happening to the residents. The Hive is kind of the part of town that the rest of the city doesn’t want you to know about. It’s, basically, a ghetto where all the undesirables have been pushed. In this instance, given the world the game takes place in, means insects.
There’s an ex con out on the streets and he may be involved. But this conspiracy may reach up pretty high in the social order. This could be pretty big, folks.
Gameplay is, basically, the same as Paint It Red. Some things have been tweeked but at the end of the day it’s still a noir themes point and click adventure with anthropomorphic animal people that drive cars, own diners, play piano, and practice questionable medical procedures.
Graphics are the same as the last game. Same with the music.
It really is a step right from the last game into this game. No side steps, no detours.
I will say that while the story is a little darker and deeper than the previous game, I don’t really like the way they handled it. Everything else is pretty great but I feel like the story falls flat in a few places. Which is a shame. We really got to like these people over the course of a couple of games and I don’t think they did them right in a few instances.
